PRINCE OTSU to LADY ISHIKAWA
(7th Cent.)

Gentle foothills,
and in the dew drops of the mountains,
soaked, I waited for you--
grew wet from standing there
in the dew drops of the mountains.

Her response:
Waiting for me,
you grew wet there
in gentle foothills,
in the dew drops of the mountains--
I wish I'd been such drops of dew.

(10th Century Anonymous)

Early morning glows
in the faint shimmer
of first light.
Choked with sadness,
I help you into your clothes.

^^^

Shall we stay in the
House to make love, when over
The grasses of Inami Moor
There glows the moonfilled night?

TZU YEH

BUSY IN SPRINGTIME

Bright moonlight shines through the trees.
In a rich brocade, the flowers bloom.
How can I think of you-
Alone, lonely, working at my loom.

SONG
Winter skies are cold and low,
With harsh winds and freezing sleet.
But when we make love beneath our quilt,
We make three summer months of heat.

IZUMI SHIKIBU

Even if I now saw you
only once,
I would long for you
through worlds,
worlds.

^^^

The way I must enter
leads through darkness to darkness -
O moon above the mountains' rim,
please shine a little further
on my path.

^^^

Sleeplessly
I watch over
the spring night -
but no amount of guarding
is enough to make it stay.

^^^

All the flowers
have fallen in this wind
blowing through the night.
What will there be
for consolation tomorrow?

^^^

I long for the sound
of your voice.
The face
I see so clearly
doesn't say a word.
